Sacramento announcement
Thursday January 28th, 2010
On January 12, I announced my candidacy with these words,
"My name is Laura Wells, and I am running as a candidate for the Green Party nomination for Governor. And I want to say, there are solutions: Solutions that will not hurt hardworking Californians, and will make our state great once again.
It's official!

I announced on January 12 that I am running as a candidate for the Green Party nomination for Governor.
During the announcement event I had many opportunities to communicate the message to FIX THE MONEY in our great state. My biggest hope is that reporters will bring up questions about fixing the money when they talk to other candidates: changing the 2/3 majority on budget and revenue; changing property tax to a split roll; and taxing – fairly for a change – the super-rich individuals and corporations. THERE ARE SOLUTIONS. Let’s put them on the table.
Another note, just for fun. The rains, with 80% to 90% chance of precipitation, held off. After the announcement interviews were over, we left the south steps of the Capitol and by the time we walked to the west side, it started to pour! It was a fine day.
What can we do?

People often say to me, “I would like the world to be a better place, but the news depresses me. How do you do it?”
My answer has been, “To understand what’s going on, follow the money; to know what to do about it, follow your heart. We all have different gifts (and different wounds!) but a similar desire to make our lives mean something. Can we take care of ourselves and our close family and friends, and be engaged citizens, and have good fun and good health? Yes!”
