Here's to changing this system -
November gives us a chance!

On June 6, 2006, I won my uncontested primary, and I will be on the ballot on November 7, 2006 as the Green Party candidate for Controller of California. I am running with the intention of doing everything I can to help repair our democracy, so that when people participate in our voting booths and in our neighborhoods, we will have more power to create a better California, and a better world.

What gives me hope for real improvement in the state budget and other vital issues is that electoral reform has captured the attention of many this year. Ranked Choice (Instant Runoff) Voting, where we rank our choices 1-2-3, has been implemented in San Francisco, voter-approved in Berkeley, and on the November ballot in Oakland and Davis. I was part of the core group of citizens who worked to convince the Oakland City Council to place IRV on the ballot. "Clean Money", or Voluntary Public Campaign Finance, has been implemented in Arizona and Maine, and is on the November ballot in California. Issue by issue, and candidate by candidate, this broken system has been losing ground for us, but these seeds of change can be nurtured and can begin to turn things around. People of this state have planted seeds for improving our democracy, education, healthcare, and the environment, as well as public safety, transportation, and employment. The Controller in California can help citizens use the tools, such as wise investment of our taxes, and renewal of our natural and human resources. As recently as the November 2005 election we saw people say "no" to destructive methods. Let's use all our power to continue this shift, toward a healthier batch of representatives, and a healthy, participative democracy. Register Green, and vote Green!
